India meet completes increasing markets trip, says Goldman

India Travel -Amidst its own set of troubles that may even see the splitting up of the top job, American investment banking powerhouse, Goldman Sachs, on Thursday said it is holding a board meets in India for the first time as part of the larger series exploring key developing markets.

In an email response to queries sent by Business Standard, Edward Naylor, Asia director, Goldman Sachs said the meeting completes a series of trips made by the board to key developing markets. “The 12-member board, which typically holds a meeting every year outside the US, will travel to New Delhi and Mumbai this month. Directors have previously convened in China, Russia, the Middle East and Brazil,” Naylor added.

The board led by chairman and chief executive officer (CEO) Lloyd C Blankfein includes India-born Arcelor Mittal Chairman Lakshmi Mittal as one of the directors. But the Goldman top brass is clearly watching the ongoing the policy paralysis and the government's taxation policies very closely and as the perfect backdrop. The day began as early as 9 am with interactions with the cream of India Inc meeting Blankfein. From Axis Bank's Shikha Sharma to ICICI Bank and Infosys Chairman K V Kamath to Adi Godrej and Cyrus Mistry, the ideas, outlook and brainstorming session continued with the top Indian corporate thought leaders over a working lunch at the Taj Mahal Hotel as well.

“Issues like retrospective amendments and the Vodafone tax case are bothering many global investors and Goldman is no exception. They made it quite clear that these are retrograde steps, and pursuing them may have a negative impact on the India outlook story,” said a CEO who attended the session. Reserve Bank of India Deputy Governor Subir Gokarn is also believed to have attended the day-long meeting. Taj Mahal Hotel is the base for the entire Goldman team, as many of the 12-member board have brought in their family and children.

So, the Goldman first wives club spent the day shopping and sightseeing while the men had thier working session and review meetings. The grand evening gala that is also planned at the same venue "is expected to be less formal". But the guest list again is be;lieved to be strictly by invitation. It includes Mukesh Ambani, Kumar Birla, Prashant Ruia, and Godrej among others. The guest list is truly exhaustive. Noel Tata, Uday Kotak, Keki Mistry, Nitin Paranjpe, Swati Piramal, Gautam Singhania, Rahul Bajaj, GMR's Subba Rao, Infosys CFO Shibulal also attended the evening dinner.

"Many of the top corporates or CEOs are Goldman clients. So an evening dinner is expected to be more social and broad base," said a person aware of the schedule. From tomorrow, the action will move to Delhi where the board meeting will actually take place. Goldman Sachs, the fifth-biggest US bank by assets, has climbed 40 per cent in New York Stock Exchange composite trading this year after dropping 46 per cent in 2011, its worst year for profit since 2008. The average estimate of 28 analysts surveyed by Bloomberg is for earnings per share to more than double to $11.45 this year from last year’s $4.51 a share.

The 12-member board’s meeting comes two weeks after former derivatives salesman Greg Smith wrote an opinion piece in the New York Times that blamed Blankfein and President Gary D Cohn, both members of the board, for presiding over deterioration in the firm’s culture. Blankfein and Cohn said most employees disagree with Smith’s assertion that the firm rips off clients in pursuit of profit and said they would investigate his claims.

Air India 'down nearly $2 million a day'

India Tours -India's debt-laden national carrier Air India makes a loss of nearly 100 million rupees ($1.9 million) every day, the country's civil aviation minister told parliament on Wednesday. The country's fourth-largest airline by market share has been hit hard by rising fuel prices and fierce competition which have added to its legacy of labour problems, crushing debts and a costly merger in 2007.
Air India 'down nearly $2 million a day'
"The total loss of Air India everyday on its operations is approximately rupees 10 cores ($A1.9 million)," Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh was quoted as saying by the Press Trust of India. The Indian government has pumped about 12 billion rupees ($A227 million) into the airline in the financial year 2010-11 and expects another 67 billion rupees for the fiscal year ending March 2012.

Air India has been in the red since 2007 when it merged with domestic carrier Indian Airlines and has seen its overall share of passenger traffic fall due to competition from private, domestic low-cost airlines. In a bid to help the distressed state carrier, the finance ministry in 2009 asked all government officials to use Air India for all their domestic and India Travel, international travels.

The employees of Air India are threatening to go on strike on April 2 if the debt-laden company is unable to clear money owed to staff in unpaid salaries. India Tours -Will India be permissible to use Karachi Port?

India Tours -Giving a trade corridor to India will reduce the transportation time to Indian goods consignments bound for the Indian Punjab and reduce the traveling distance of almost 700 kms. A senior official familiar with the development disclosed on condition of anonymity that India Tours was seeking both land and rail routes. He said India’s main focus was on rail route and keeping the land route for containerized cargo as second option. He added that the matter was being discussed and a final decision would be taken after considering all opinions --for and against the idea.
India Tours -Will India be permissible to use Karachi Port
In this regard, India initially decided to allocate a dedicated space in Ludhiana dry port and later a separate dry port either in Amritsar or Ludhiana depending upon the success of the cargo traffic from this route. The land traveling distance of Amritsar district to Mumbai sea port is 1,700 kilometer and 1,704 from Ludhiana district. On the other hand, the total distance between Lahore-Karachi is only 1032 kilometers. Thus, more than 650 kilometer traveling distance of cargo bound for the Indian Punjab would be saved by moving them from Karachi port as compared to the cargo moved from Mumbai sea port.

The India travel time for cargo via land route from Karachi to Lahore varies from 24 to 36 hours while it takes only 18 to 20 hours if moved by train. Contrary to this, cargo travel by land routes from Mumbai to Indian Punjab Amritsar or Ludhiana districts takes 48 to 60 hours and 24 to 36 hours by rail route. Thus trade corridor for Indian cargos will be both time and distance efficient. However, cost of moving the cargo by using Pakistan’s trade corridor is yet to be calculated, he mentioned. The situation of Pakistan Railways is very poor right now and India might consider sending their own train to Pakistan.

A Customs official told The News that an option of granting trade corridor to India on the pattern of Afghan Transit Trade was being discussed in Islamabad. He said it was also considered that the movement of the India-bound cargo would be handled by National Logistic Company (NLC) as it was handling Pak-India trade at Wagah Border. However, India would be reluctant to the NLC option as it is a subsidiary of the army besides being costly, he added.

India Tours likely to have around 1,747 million travelers by 2021 Report

India Tours - Going by the double-digit growth of the travel industry, India is expected to have around 1,747 million travelers by 2021, which would require 1, 88,500 additional hotel rooms, according to a recent study. "Considering the way in which travel industry has grown in the past and factoring in the government's unassuming efforts towards growth in the sector, there will be around 1,747 million travelers and an additional requirement of 1, 88,500 rooms," says a white-paper on `Hotel Room Supply, Capital Investment and Manpower Requirement by 2021' by HVS and The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), India.

HVS is a global consulting and services organization focused on the hotel, restaurant, shared ownership, gaming, and leisure industries; WTTC is a forum for business leaders in the India Travel & Tourism industry. It predicts that by 2021, global travel industry would see 1,362 billion travelers, of which India is expected to account for 0.8 per cent. The domestic travelers will grow at 8 per cent annually to 1,735 million by 2021. About room requirement, the report said India would need a total of 3, 51,540 rooms by 2021.

Budget hotels will be the driving force because they usually have more rooms per hotel than a first-class or luxury hotel can be built faster and cheaper in multiple micro-markets as well as in most tiers I, tier II and tier III cities, it said. The existing stock of hotel inventory is 1,63,038 rooms, it said, adding that the Indian average room inventory is less than 15 per cent of the average inventory of Asia Pacific and other global cities.

Capital investment and the manpower are two other critical aspects. The additional investment in hospitality in the country would be around Rs 1, 27,600 cores by 2021, it said. Over the past decade, the country has witnessed a host of global brands entering the market, while the domestic brands have also considerably grown, it said. "This shift...is reflective of the maturing of the India Tours industry and highlights the fact that the country is a prominent market," the white-paper said. With the proposed expansion of branded hotels, the demand for skilled manpower will grow to 2, 84,386 by 2021, it said.
